For years the standard iPhone was the one you bought when you did not need the extras, and the screen was where that showed most. With the iPhone 17, Apple gives the base model a 120Hz ProMotion display for the first time, a brighter panel, two 48MP rear cameras and the new A19 chip, all for USD 799 with 256GB to start.

This is a documented review: I brought together Apple’s official specs and the measured results published by testers such as Engadget and GSMArena, then added my own verdict.

Design and the screen that changes the story

The dimensions stay familiar. The iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch OLED screen at 2622 x 1206 and 460 ppi, and it weighs 177 g, according to Apple’s specifications page. What changed is behind the glass. ProMotion, which lets the refresh rate climb to 120Hz, used to be a Pro feature. Now it is on the phone most people actually buy.

Apple rates the screen for “3000 nits peak brightness (outdoor)”. That is a claim, and the tested numbers are more modest, as you would expect from a lab. GSMArena measured 824 nits with manual brightness, “just over 1,000 nits” sustained in auto mode, and over 1,700 nits in a short two-second peak. Those are still very good results for reading a screen under strong sun, which matters a lot in the Gulf summer.

On the back sits what Apple calls the “48MP Dual Fusion camera system”: a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. Up front there is a new 18MP Center Stage camera at f/1.9. What caught my attention in the reviews is how often the selfie camera came up as a highlight rather than a footnote.

The phone shipped with iOS 26, and storage starts at 256GB, with 512GB as the only other option.

Performance, battery and charging

The A19 has a 6-core CPU (2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores) and a 5-core GPU. GSMArena ran the usual benchmarks and recorded 3680 single-core and 9360 multi-core in Geekbench 6, plus 4803 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. In plain terms, this is flagship-class speed, and reviewers treated performance as a strength rather than a compromise.

Battery is where the two main tests tell a consistent story from different angles. Engadget’s Billy Steele described a typical day of email, messaging, music and streaming, and said the phone “retained 16% battery after 17 hours of use”. GSMArena’s lab test gave an Active Use Score of around 15 hours.

Apple does not publish a battery capacity in mAh. It claims “up to 30 hours” of video playback and “up to 50% charge in 20 minutes” with a compatible adapter. GSMArena lists the capacity at 3,692 mAh, which is their figure, not Apple’s. For charging, GSMArena used a 67W charger and measured 36% after 15 minutes, 63% after 30 minutes and a full charge in 1 hour 25 minutes.

What reviewers agree on

Strengths:

  • The first base iPhone with a 120Hz ProMotion display.
  • A much brighter screen than before.
  • Strong A19 performance.
  • A very good 18MP Center Stage selfie camera.
  • Two 48MP rear cameras.

Weaknesses:

  • The best camera features are still reserved for the Pro models, and there is no telephoto lens.
  • Engadget notes that 6.3 inches may be too small for some buyers.
  • GSMArena found the speakers slightly quieter than on the iPhone 16.

Who should buy it

If you are holding an iPhone that is three or four years old, this is the easy recommendation. The screen upgrade is the kind of thing you notice every single time you scroll, and the battery results suggest a full day without anxiety.

If you are coming from an iPhone 16, the case is weaker. The 120Hz screen and the new front camera are real improvements, but the rear cameras still lack a zoom lens, and that is exactly the gap the Pro models are designed to fill.

For readers in the region, the good news is timing: Apple named the UAE and Saudi Arabia among the first countries to get the phone on September 19, so there is no waiting for a second wave or relying on grey imports. I would still compare the price on Apple’s local store with carrier offers before buying.

Verdict

The iPhone 17 is the most sensible iPhone Apple has made in a while. In my view, bringing ProMotion to the base model fixes the single most obvious reason people used to pay extra for a Pro, and the testers’ numbers back up the brighter screen and the solid battery life. Engadget scored it 91/100, and the praise across reviews is consistent.

It is not perfect. The missing telephoto lens and the quieter speakers are real trade-offs, and anyone who wants a big screen should look elsewhere. For most buyers, though, this is the iPhone to get. TechKahwa rating: 8.8/10.
