Android will hang up on fake bank calls for you, starting with three banks

Google has announced a set of new Android protections aimed at scams and phone theft. The headline feature, Verified Financial Calls, lets Android automatically end calls from spoofed numbers pretending to be your bank’s app, though at launch it works with only three financial apps and none of them are Arab banks.

What happened

In a Google Security blog post dated 12 May 2026, the company described what is coming to Android this year. The most practical piece for everyday users is Verified Financial Calls. In Google’s words, Android will be “automatically ending phone calls from spoofed numbers impersonating participating financial apps.”

The idea is straightforward. Scammers often fake the caller ID so that a call appears to come from your bank. With this feature, a participating bank’s app and Android work together, so a call that claims to be the bank but did not come from the bank can be cut off before you talk yourself into trouble.

The rollout starts small. As Help Net Security quoted Google: “We’ll begin rolling this out on Android 11+ devices with Revolut, Itaú, and Nubank in the coming weeks”. So this is not available with any bank in our region yet, and your local bank’s calls will not be protected unless it joins.

Google also announced changes that will arrive with Android 17:

  • Live Threat Detection will watch for “SMS forwarding” and “accessibility overlay” abuse, two techniques tied to banking scams. This rolls out on Android 17 devices in the second half of 2026.
  • Mark as lost on Android 17 can require biometrics, and Google is expanding “default-on theft protections globally” to new Android 17 devices.
  • Advanced Protection on Android 17 will remove “access to the accessibility service from all apps that are not labeled as accessibility tools.”

That last one caught my attention. The accessibility service is there to help people with disabilities use their phones, and an app with that access can see and do a great deal on screen. Cutting it off for apps that are not real accessibility tools is a blunt but sensible move for the people who opt in to Advanced Protection.

Who is affected

Verified Financial Calls is aimed at Android 11 and later, which covers a wide range of phones, but only for customers of Revolut, Itaú and Nubank during the first phase.

The Android 17 features are a different story. They are not on all phones today. Live Threat Detection’s new checks arrive on Android 17 devices in the second half of 2026, and the default-on theft protections apply to new Android 17 devices. If your phone will not get Android 17, you will not get those parts.

By the numbers

What to do now

  1. Install updates when your phone offers them. That includes both system updates and Google Play system updates.
  2. Keep Google Play Protect and Safe Browsing turned on. Safe Browsing also enables Chrome’s checks on APK files you download.
  3. Turn on Theft Protection and set a strong screen lock. Look for Theft Protection in your phone’s settings.
  4. Consider Advanced Protection if you are high risk. Journalists, activists and executives are the people Google has in mind.
  5. If “the bank” calls, hang up and call back. Use the number inside your bank’s app, never a number the caller gives you. This works with every bank, today, on every phone.

Why it matters

Bank impersonation calls are one of the most common scams in the Arab world. The caller knows your name, sounds official, and creates urgency: a blocked card, a suspicious transfer, a code you must read out now. The weak point is trust in caller ID, and Verified Financial Calls goes after exactly that.

My honest view is that the design is good and the reach is tiny for now. The feature only helps when a bank joins, and none of ours have. The real question for readers here is whether banks in the Gulf, Egypt, Jordan or the Maghreb sign up, and how quickly. Until they do, step five in the list above is still your best protection.

The Android 17 changes will matter more over time, especially the checks for SMS forwarding and accessibility abuse, since those abuse patterns sit close to where scams actually cost people money. But they depend on phones getting Android 17, and many phones in our region stay on older versions for years.
