Google first teased the Google Home Speaker in October 2025, and it finally reached shelves on June 25 at USD 99.99. With a week of reviews now published, the picture is clear: it sounds far better than the Nest Mini, but Gemini’s responses are inconsistent and some of the best features sit behind a subscription.

This is a documented review: I brought together Google’s official details and the results published by testers such as Engadget, Android Central and HotHardware, then added my own verdict. I waited about a week after launch so I could include Android Central’s timing tests.

At a glance

Item Details
Price USD 99.99 (Google); some Gemini features need a Google Home subscription at USD 10 or USD 20 per month
Arab market availability Not officially sold in the region: none of the 18 launch countries is an Arab country
TechKahwa rating 7.5/10
Best for Google Home users who want a compact speaker with much better sound and a Thread border router

Design and hardware

The speaker is a compact fabric-covered design, 4.2 inches in diameter and 3.4 inches tall, according to 9to5Google’s launch report. Colours are Porcelain and Hazel worldwide, with Jade and Berry limited to the US. Reviewers like the look, and it is the kind of object that sits on a kitchen counter without drawing attention.

Weight depends on who you ask. Android Central lists “Weight: 396g”, while HotHardware lists 0.9 pounds. The two figures are close but not identical, so I am giving both with their source.

Inside, 9to5Google reports a single 58 mm full-range driver producing 360 degree sound, and Google claims 2.5 times stronger bass than the Nest Mini. That is one driver, so this is not a stereo speaker on its own. There are three far-field microphones with a physical mute switch, a quad-core 2.0 GHz A55 processor with an NPU, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and a Thread 1.3 border router, useful if you already own Thread smart home devices.

One design complaint appears across the consensus: the power cable is not removable.

A note on dates: not every outlet lists the same on-sale day, so I am using the official one from Google’s own announcement, June 25.

Sound and Gemini in daily use

Sound is the clear win. Engadget found it “significantly louder than the HomePod mini”. That is a listening impression rather than a decibel measurement, but it lines up with the consensus that this is a large improvement over the Nest Mini.

Gemini is the more complicated part. Android Central timed the responses and found that simple smart home and information requests are quick: “responses generally take about 1 second to process” for lights, cameras and weather. Other tasks are much slower. “Setting a timer, for example, often takes 20-25 seconds of processing time”, and adding something to a grocery list “takes 5-10 seconds”. What caught my attention is that setting a timer, one of the most common things people ask a kitchen speaker to do, turned out to be among the slowest.

Reviewers do agree that Gemini understands natural speech better than the old Google Assistant. The trade-off is that some Gemini features require a Google Home subscription, which Engadget lists at USD 10 per month for Standard and USD 20 per month for Advanced.

Test Source Result
Lights, cameras, weather Android Central About 1 second
Setting a timer Android Central Often 20 to 25 seconds
Adding to a grocery list Android Central 5 to 10 seconds
Loudness vs HomePod mini Engadget “Significantly louder” (no dB figure)
Weight Android Central / HotHardware 396 g / 0.9 lb

What reviewers agree on

Strengths:

  • Much better sound than the Nest Mini
  • Compact, attractive fabric design
  • Gemini understands natural speech better than Google Assistant
  • A built-in Thread border router

Weaknesses:

  • Key Gemini features are behind a subscription
  • Responses are inconsistent and sometimes slow
  • The power cable is not removable
  • There is no cheaper Google speaker left in the range

Who should buy it

If you already run a Google Home setup with smart lights, cameras and Thread devices, this speaker is an easy upgrade for sound and connectivity. It is also a sensible replacement for an ageing Nest Mini, as long as you accept that Gemini is still uneven and that some features cost extra each month.

If you want a speaker mainly for timers and lists, Android Central’s timings suggest patience will be required for now.

For readers in the Arab world, the answer is simpler. The Google Home Speaker is not officially sold in the region: Google’s launch list of 18 countries covers North America, much of Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and includes no Arab country. I also could not verify Arabic support for Gemini for Home, so I would not buy it expecting to speak to it in Arabic.

Verdict

The Google Home Speaker fixes the old weakness of Google’s small speakers, which was sound, and adds a Thread border router in a neat package. Engadget gave it 8 out of 10. The limits are on the software side: slow responses for some everyday tasks and features locked behind a subscription.

In my view, the hardware is ready and the assistant is not quite there yet. TechKahwa rating: 7.5/10.
