Apple unveiled iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, on 9 September, priced from $1,999 with pre-orders opening on 16 October. The phone launched alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the first Apple event led by John Ternus, who became CEO on 1 September.
Two screens, one very Apple price
The basic idea is simple. iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch display on the inside and a 5.4-inch display on the outside, and Apple says each one reaches 3000 nits of peak brightness. Closed, it is a compact phone. Open, it is a small tablet.
Inside is the new A20 Pro chip. Apple says its CPU is “up to 20% faster than A19 Pro” and its GPU “up to 40% faster”. Those are Apple’s own comparisons against last year’s chip, so I would wait for independent testing before treating them as real-world gains, but the direction is clear: Apple did not treat the foldable as a place to save on silicon.
Storage starts at 256GB and goes through 512GB and 1TB up to 2TB. That top option says a lot about who Apple thinks this phone is for.
Pre-orders open on 16 October, and the phone goes on sale on 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions.

A year ago it was thin, this year it folds
What caught my attention is how different this bet is from last year’s. In September 2025 Apple’s headline phone was the iPhone Air: 5.6mm thick, the thinnest iPhone ever, starting at $999. The message then was that less phone could be better. Twelve months later, the headline product is a phone that unfolds into a larger one, at roughly twice the Air’s launch price.
Those two launches are not a contradiction. Both are Apple testing what people will pay for a new shape after years of nearly identical slabs. The Air asked whether buyers would give up some things for thinness. The Duo asks whether they will pay a large premium for more screen in the same pocket.
There is also the leadership change. Apple announced in April that Ternus would take over as chief executive, with Tim Cook moving to executive chairman, and the switch took effect on 1 September. Choosing a foldable as the centrepiece of a new CEO’s first event is a statement in itself, and this was very much a hardware-first show.
Why it matters
For most buyers the iPhone 18 Pro, from $1,199, and the Pro Max, from $1,299, will stay the realistic choice. The Duo sits $700 above the Pro Max’s starting price and $800 above the Pro. That makes it a statement product first and a volume product second, at least at launch.
For readers in the Arab world, the practical questions are availability and local price. Apple lists more than 70 countries and regions for the 23 October launch but quotes its headline prices in US dollars. Local prices in Gulf and other Arab markets usually differ once taxes and currency are included, so the $1,999 figure is a reference point, not what you will pay at a store in Riyadh, Dubai or Cairo. Check Apple’s regional store when pre-orders open on 16 October.
For app developers in the region, a foldable iPhone means a new screen size to support. Apps built only for a single tall screen may look awkward on a 7.6-inch inner display. Teams with Arabic interfaces should test right-to-left layouts on both screens early, before the phone reaches users.
